I was wondering if there is a family or friend of a person (or better yet - a more severely affected autistic person) who has to deal with questions of group homes or adult day services. This is a field I am considering (I am an HFA myself) and am wondering what matters most/greatest concerns about giving (so-called) lowering functioning individuals the care and respect they need, and suggestions on how to help them participate (if desired) and engaged in group activities.
I am currently awaiting a reply from a mainstream pre-school for a position as a classroom aide, but if this does not work out, plan to apply for work at an adult day care center for grown individuals living with developmental disabilities.
If I do end up working with adults, I want to be more than just a babysitter. I want to keep these people comfortable and happy, and give them things to be proud of. I would love to do music or arts & crafts, or help work on life-skills with those more able.
I don't know how off-topic this is, but for the family members on here, what would you ideally wish for in a caretaker for your afflicted loved one?
